Tunnel vs. Funnel: Vision

The point

Funnel vision vs tunnel vision: this is where true breakthroughs come from. Other people outside your industry have identified breakthroughs you'll never know about if you don't develop what I call funnel vision.

Why it matters

A single point of light far ahead is comfortable to walk toward. One product, one channel, one way to grow — and the walls on either side of you stay invisible, along with every opportunity waiting just beyond them. My own career started inside that corridor, and the narrow path is what taught me the wider way to see.

A funnel has the opposite geometry. Open wide at the mouth, narrow at the base — which is exactly how a breakthrough gets made. Take in every asset, every relationship and every revenue-generating activity you already hold, then pour that whole gathered force through one concentrated point. Widen the mouth, concentrate the flow.

It points you first at what you already own and have not yet put to work. Tunnel vision watches the known performance indicators, the numbers already on the report, the ones everybody in your category watches. Funnel vision surfaces the overlooked performance indicators — the hidden drivers underneath those numbers, where the real leverage has been sitting the whole time.

Improve one stream on its own and you get a small gain. See every revenue-generating activity as one connected system and you can tune the system itself — Revenue System Optimization — and that is what turns a gain into an exponential one. The wide mouth also takes the walls down: stay inside your own category and you will get rat-tat-tat, the same handful of moves everyone there already knows, and never see the breakthrough sitting one industry over.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Calling the tunnel focus. Concentration at the base is the same discipline either way, but it only becomes a breakthrough when something was gathered at the mouth first — and you are almost certainly concentrating on the one stream you started with.

The test: Name the push you have concentrated on hardest this year. Now name what you gathered and weighed before choosing it. If nothing was gathered, that was the tunnel, not focus.

What it solves

The words a business owner uses for this before anybody has told them the name of it. If one of these is a sentence you have said out loud, this is your strategy.

  • We grow one way and only one way“Everything I sell goes out as one product down one channel, and when that slows I have nothing else to pull on.”The wide mouth of the funnel — every asset, relationship and revenue-generating activity you already hold, gathered in before anything gets concentrated.
  • The same numbers every month“I read the same report every month and it tells me what I already knew before I opened it.”The overlooked performance indicators sitting underneath the known ones, which is where the leverage has been the whole time.
  • Assets nobody has ever worked“I have lists, relationships and capabilities in this business that earn nothing and have not been touched in years.”A first move aimed at what you already own and have never put to work, before you spend anything acquiring more.
  • One stream at a time is the whole plan“I improve whichever part is loudest that quarter, and the improvements never seem to add up to much.”Revenue System Optimization — every stream seen as one connected system, so tuning it together produces what tuning one alone never can.
  • Nothing new ever reaches me“Everyone I learn from does exactly what I do, and I keep hearing the same handful of moves repeated back to me.”Why the breakthroughs sitting one industry over stay invisible from inside the tunnel, and the wider view that lets them in.
  • Hired for the one problem they named“I get engaged for the single problem the client names, and I have never been paid to widen what they are looking at.”A way to open the client's whole revenue picture before you narrow it — the work a specialist cannot sell.

The challenge

Gather the whole page, then concentrate on one line.

On one page, list every activity in your business that touches revenue — every product, every channel, every relationship, list, license, piece of idle capacity, every asset you stopped counting years ago. Then mark three that already earn something and have never had real attention. Circle the single one that would lift the most other lines on that page if it doubled, and put every working hour you have in the next seven days through that one. Keep the page dated; it is the mouth you widen from.

How you will know it is done A dated page listing every revenue-generating activity you hold, three of them marked unworked, and seven full days of effort spent on exactly one.

Once this is working, here is what to multiply

Improve the system first. Then multiply it. This panel is the second run at the strategy above, and it is deliberately useless until the first run is done.

Before you point anything at this You have gone outside your own industry once, by hand, and brought back a working practice.
What it multiplies Reading across hundreds of industries at once, surfacing the analogues your own category never mentions, and mapping which of your revenue streams each one would touch.
The trap Widening the mouth and never concentrating the flow. A machine will hand you four hundred adjacent possibilities, and an owner holding four hundred possibilities has a wider tunnel, not a funnel. The narrowing is the work, and nothing about generation performs it.
